Our philosophy

Teaching English that matters

We don’t teach English from a textbook. We teach the English our learners actually need β€” right now, this week, for the letter that arrived this morning.

πŸ“‹

UC-designed curriculum

Most ESOL courses teach general English. Ours is built around Universal Credit β€” the journal, claimant commitments, Work Coach appointments, and the letters that land on your doormat. Because understanding what is expected of you is the first step to meeting those expectations.

πŸ› οΈ

English you can use immediately

Every session teaches practical, real-world language. You won’t wait nine weeks to feel the benefit β€” from week one, you are learning words and phrases that make a difference today. Sessions build on each other, and 45 minutes of homework after each class deepens what you have learned.

πŸ€–

Digital skills as standard

We teach on Microsoft Teams, so every session builds your Microsoft 365 skills β€” Outlook, Word, OneDrive β€” alongside your English. We also teach you to use Microsoft Translator, Google Translate, and Microsoft Authenticator so you can navigate digital life with confidence.

Why we say it

Everybody must speak.

In a typical Greater Manchester ESOL class, there are 25 or more learners. In an hour, each person might speak for two minutes β€” if they are confident enough to speak at all. That is not learning. That is waiting.

We keep our classes to a maximum of 12 learners. In our sessions, everybody speaks, everybody practises, and everybody gets feedback. Nobody sits in silence. That is why we say it: Everybody must speak.

25+
learners in a typical GM ESOL class β€” less than 2 minutes of speaking time per person per hour
Max 12
learners in an SLC CIC class β€” real conversation time, real feedback, real progress
“Everybody must speak.” is not just a tagline. It is our teaching philosophy β€” high student talking time, every session, no exceptions.
I watched people lose their benefits because they couldn’t communicate in English. Not because they weren’t trying. I built SLC CIC because the system was failing them.

β€” Kenneth Moore, Founder Β· Former DWP Universal Credit Work Coach
